2 out of 5 stars It's just so 'meh'   January 4, 2009
Phifer (DC)
Short Part:
Pros:
-The price is 'Meh'.
-Pulls sound processing power away from the CPU (if you have onboard sound).
-Delivers powerful sound in very RARE situations.
-The seller was amazon certified.

Cons:
-An $85 notebook card for $20 desktop card performance! Seriously!
-You have to shell out another $30+ for any expansions!
-I don't have onboard sound, I have a full fledged internal sound card!
-Lacks many of the additional features of its desktop equivalents including EAX.

Long Part
Pros:
With the ridiculous $40 shelled out for the 7.1 expansion bay, I was able to make my laptop completely 7.1 capable, which was a good thing, because I just happened to have a pair or crappy creative 7.1 speakers handy! (it supplies 7.1)

Cons:
This has to be one of the most mediocre sounds cards I've ever owned. It literally does the absolute basics required of a soundcard and completely manages to leave out all of the cool additional features of it's desktop "equivalent". So typical of creative, to supply the bare minimum to their customers and charge outrageous prices. I thought I would be able to game successfully with this expansion card. All that ultimately happened, was that I uninstalled everything creative related, and switched back to using my internal Realtek sound card. It way not be 7.1, but it sounds a hell-of-alot better going through the speakers than this crap. The only, and I mean THE ONLY thing saving this from a 1 star rating is that it at least allowed for 7.1 audio if you buy the expansion.

4 out of 5 stars Awesome..   December 13, 2008

The sound quality is really good and I enjoy watching movies and playing games with this sound card. Well, the actual reason I got this card is because my laptop's internal sound card got damaged and this one looked good enough to server the purpose. However, one problem I face very frequently is my laptop hangs while watching videos, audio or playing games and I do a force restart. There may be many reasons behind this but the overall the card is good.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Performance   September 8, 2008

Execelent And High Quality sound, very easy to install and the performance of your notebook was increased, with the combination od the 5.1 or 7.1 sorround sound speakers.
It had manny options to set up your type and quality of sound, for games and music

3 out of 5 stars Be Aware: ExpressCard only available on newer notebooks   July 15, 2008

I assumed that my Dell Inspiron 9300 was new enough to use this card, but I was wrong. The 9300 has the older CardBus or PCMCIA type slot. Only after reading about ExpressCard in Wikipedia did I realize I had made a big mistake. It is a newer faster interface that is not compatable with CardBus. Oh Well, maybe it's time to get a more modern computer so I can use my fancy new soundcard!

4 out of 5 stars Works Great   June 13, 2008

I bought this card for one reason - I use my laptop for games, and I am running Windows Vista. The onboard soundcard in my laptop doesn't support any EAX-alike (hardware 3D sound) features, even for only 2 channels. This card supports every last one. If you use Creative's ALchemy software, you can run old EAX titles with full hardware sound, in Vista, when using a Creative card. For games, an absolute must-have.

For music, it's decent. It has the "X-Fi Crystalizer", which is essentially a compressor. It can make some songs sound great, and I'm sure I would use it a lot more if I didn't know how to tweak my music manually. Same goes for movies.

For music production, well, it's a little bit lacking. I can get down to 5 ms delay using ASIO4ALL, but it doesn't seem to have native ASIO nor that one Vista sound interface nobody uses ;-). This is kindof a bummer, but it has more support than my onboard card, so it's good enough.

Overall, the card is very nice. I'm not sure about the value - the current going price is kinda steep - but I don't regret the purchase at all.
