2 out of 5 stars No sound   January 7, 2009

This product works great with the supplied software and then that is it. I recorded multiple test shows changing the settings and none of them would play back in XPMCE or WMP with any sound. I use an extender so that makes the whole process pointless.

5 out of 5 stars HD DVR for $70   December 17, 2008

Impressive product, works very well with a dual-core laptop with big hard drive. Would highly recommend for college kids or others spending a lot of time away from home.

I heard that Windows Media Center works better than the supplied software, so if you have Media Center, its a great buy. I never used the supplied software.

5 out of 5 stars excellent tuner   December 13, 2008

This tuner blows Pinnacle Pro Stick out of water. Great multi-path/weak signal tuner. Use via Vista Media Center, tunes all solid greens, Pinnacle got yellows/reds and wouldn't lock tuning to record in HD. One thing, the Aver Media Center software used up a ton of RAM even without using it. 2g RAM, Intel 2160 Dual Core Processor, 1.6ghz, Vista HP sp1. Idle RAM went from 50 to 34% by removing AMC...besides, already got VMC's tuners/HD DVR. Otherwise, best ATSC tuner used so far, well worth it, bought from Amazon itself, delivered fast. CM 2016/7777 antenna rig, CR IA near KCC approx 35 miles from tower farm.

5 out of 5 stars Great alternative to a TV in college dorm.   November 5, 2008

Having had an basic Avermedia TV tuner on a Vista desktop for two years, which has worked great, when we started looking for an option for TV for our college-bound daughter, an Avermedia USB TV tuner was our first choice.

I called Avermedia and asked their advice about the best options. The lady I spoke to was extremely helpful. The Avertv Hybrid Volar Max was a brand new product at the time and she recommended this for several of the options and features, including HD and FM, over the basic USB TV Tuner. We were able to find it on Amazon for about $80 (the price has since dropped).

Our daughter has it hooked up to the cable in her dorm and it is an easy and convenient way for her to watch and record TV. Unlike a TV set, she can lie comfortably on her bed with the laptop right beside her.

On both our computers we are using Windows Media Center rather than the AverMedia Center. I did not even consider installing the AverMedia version, because the Windows Media setup on Vista was so easy (unlike other Vista problems). We already had the remotes and infrared units for Windows Media.

As far as I know the USB set up went without a hitch and there have been no problems. I would highly recommend this product as a TV option for college kids, or in areas where you don't have room for TV.

I cannot speak for any of the other features of the tuner, but used with a direct cable connection this is a great TV tuner.

3 out of 5 stars Doesn' always record   October 24, 2008

I have been using this for over a month, I wanted a solution to record TV since I don't have cable and using the Digital box will only allow me to record the channel I am watching.

The TV reception is better than I get on my TV and I can watch multiple shows at 1x.

I setup to record, but it doesn't always record. The documentation is vague so I am not sure if I am setting this up correctly. It appears to record a show and then close down. I don't' know if it is a memory issue.
