The single greatest cookbook I've ever owned... September 28, 2008 B. Hamburg (Seattle, WA USA) I have owned this cookbook for years and have purchased many copies since for friends and family. I'm not a vegetarian but I try not to consume a lot of meat and would have to say, in all honesty, that I use this cookbook at least three or four times a week (even after all these years). Rather than count the number of recipes I have made, I would probably be better off counting those I still haven't tried! I could see how it might be frustrating to track down some of the ingredients if you don't live in a large city but every recipe can be tweaked to use a more standard item, if needed, or simply ordered online. My favorite recipes that get rave reviews from friends are the pierogies, Greek lentil soup, yam and pepita quesadillas, either of the burgers, and the lime sugar cookies. I also make the whole wheat hotcakes nearly every weekend!
love it! August 19, 2008 Sally (Seattle, WA) I love this cookbook. After cooking from it for about a year and a half, it is definitely my "go to" cookbook whenever I'm looking to make a special meal. It has turned me on to so many new flavors and has influenced me to try combining flavors in interesting and unexpected ways. My favorite recipes are the cilantro pesto, the rosemary garlic foccacia, the white bean hummos with sage, Monk's curry with homemade curry paste, and the lime pepita sugar cookies. Some of the recipes are quite labor-intensive, but definitely worth it for the great food. I'm planning a trip to Victoria for the sole purpose of going to the Rebar restaurant!
Truly a winner August 3, 2008 book addicted I bought this book after it was mentioned on Mark Bittman's blog (Bitten~ 3/19/08) as one of the books to have on your cookbook shelf. Having been a vegetarian for over a decade I already have plenty of vegetarian cookbooks on my shelf but this one quickly has become my favorite. I have made at least 15 items out of the book. The recipes are innovative and combine flavors in a way that really appeals to my family and me. Some of the recipes do take longer, especially those that require that one makes a "mother sauce" or two before hand but I have yet to make a single thing that we didn't really like. Many recipes have an Asian or Southwestern influence.
Rebar reinvigorates !! July 30, 2008 Mama T 2 (Australia) I have wanted this book for years and it does not disappoint. The first soup I tried (Greek Red lentil) was an absolute hit, even with my meat loving partner ! It has reinvigorated our cooking.
Delightfully Different May 21, 2008 Lisa Emigh This is one of my favorite cookbooks!! I love the fusion behind many of their recipes. I also hold any cookbook in high regard when it emphasizes making most everything from scratch...even tortillas!!!! This cookbook has a great section just for basics that will start any cook off to a good start. A few points, however, that not all of the recipes I think are to the correct amounts. I do not mind this so much as it only takes a bit of "tinkering". Also, for those who do not live in an area where you have access to an excellent natural foods market, you might be limited on a few of the recipes. I still, however, think it is worth it to have this cookbook.
