Product Description
The history channel plots the course of earths amazing journey from an ocean of radioactive molten rock to a beautiful refuge for life. Studio: A&e Home Video Release Date: 04/15/2008 Run time: 94 minutes

There's a lot of information in How the Earth Was Made, but perhaps the most interesting relates to time. Quite often, the numbers are so staggering that scientists refer to it as "deep time," an appropriate term when one grapples with the notion that our planet is 4.5 billion years old, or that the oceans were formed by rainfall that lasted literally millions of years, or that 700 million years ago, Earth was completely covered by ice that was a mile thick, with surface temperatures reaching minus 40 degrees Fahrenheit. On the other end of the scale are numbers that seem surprisingly small: for instance, it wasn't until 220 years ago that the accepted church doctrine regarding the planet's age (no more than 6000 years, according to the Bible) was seriously challenged and that the key to its past was found in rocks, not scripture, while the discovery that dinosaurs once ruled the Earth came considerably later than that. Using a combination of computer graphics and animation, various drawings and diagrams, photos, location footage, and expert commentary, this fascinating, 94-minute History Channel production takes us from the very beginning, when the planet was formed by meteors colliding in space, through numerous major events (including the appearance of water, granite, and oxygen) and mind-boggling catastrophes (such as mass extinctions caused by volcanic eruptions or the enormous meteor that wiped out 75% of all living things, including the dinosaurs, some 65 million years ago), right up to the present; there's even a glimpse into the future, when Earth will likely end up as barren and lifeless as Mars (no need to hit the panic button yet, though--a few billion more years will pass before that happens). Bonus features include additional scenes and a documentary entitled "Inside the Volcano." --Sam Graham

Loved the doc. Well paced. Naration great. I loved the fact that I actually learned something. I highly recommend this for all. I think children would also find it interesting.

5 out of 5 stars An interesting subject, our planet...   October 17, 2008

Loved this one, as it went into more detail about the planet itself.I'm glad these are coming out as it has been hard to find anything on Geology, or about Earth in general that doesn't confine itself solely to the animal kingdom in one form or another.

3 out of 5 stars Great content, horrible packaging   October 13, 2008

For some reason the creators of this documentary thought it would be a good idea to package the DVD in 100% post-consumer recycled material. As a result, it looks and feels of extremely poor quality, and the packaging will not withstand the slightest bit of wear and tear.

If they wanted to improve my opinion of post-consumer goods they colossally failed.

The quality of the actual content of the DVD is excellent, however.

When I buy a DVD, I expect to be able to store it with my other DVDs, but in this case, I'm going to need to throw the original packaging away and find an actual plastic case so that it can go on the shelf without being squished.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome explanation of the earth's manufacture   August 17, 2008

Interesting and scientific explanation of the Earth's beginnings and including the next philosophized stage of existence. Great visuals and narration. Saw it on the History Channel and had to have it for my own DVD library.

4 out of 5 stars HOW THE EARTH WAS PROBABLY MADE   July 31, 2008

ASIDE FROM THE "EFFECTS" AND JERKY EDITING THIS IS PRETTY GOOD. IT'S IMPOSSIBLE TO ABSOLUTELY KNOW HOW EARTH FORMED AND DEVELOPED THROUGH TIME. WE KNOW MUCH MORE NOW THAN EVEN 200 YEARS AGO.
THIS IS A GOOD STARTER COURSE. SIT AND WATCH IT AND WONDER...

4.5 BILLION YEARS IS A VERY LONG TIME. MUCH LONGER THAN 6000 YEARS AND SIX DAYS! BUT THERE ARE FOLKS HERE IN OKLAHOMA WHO WOULD CHEERFULLY BURN YOU AT THE STAKE FOR SAYING IT...
