Don't be put off by negative reviews! June 18, 2008 Stardustrose (New Zealand) I am learning modern Hebrew and was nearly put off buying this book by the negative reviews. I'm so glad I bought it. It is absolutely brilliant and not too complex, easy to read print and well laid out. The words are also written in Hebrew lettering as they are used in Israel, after the transliteration. (It is not a Biblical Hebrew dictionary.) Thus far, I haven't had a single problem finding any particular word in it. Having said that, it is not a stand-alone dictionary. You will still need at least another good one (e.g.Oxford), written in Hebrew lettering, but it is easy to find any written words, providing you have them already written down in transliteration or already know the Hebrew letter sounds. It is very inexpensive and great value for money. I've found it extremely useful and I already had two Hebrew dictionaries. It achieves what it sets out to do and you do need to learn transliteration to be a good all round Hebrew scholar.
Does what it claims to do November 10, 2007 BfloBen (Buffalo, NY USA) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This dictionary does exactly what it claims to do... it offers an easy way to look up hebrew words in either the hebrew alphabet or in the transliterated English (Latin) characters. They clearly state on the first page of the "Guide to Use" that one must memorize the transliteration system and of course know how to pronounce the Hebrew words. I did that and it has been very helpful to me. I usually find the words I'm looking for and the transliteration is not a problem.
horrible November 6, 2006 M. Lang (Grand Rapids, MI) 2 out of 6 found this review helpful
I don't know what I was thinking when I bought it. I am learning Biblical Hebrew and this is more or less for conversational Hebrew. Aside from that...Looking up a word in Hebrew to find the English is where I have the greatest difficulty. I do not like the fact the it does not follow the Hebrew AlephBet and does not exactly follow the English alphabet either. Finding the root of a verb is nearly impossible. Too bad I lost my receipt because I would love to get a refund.
Excellent supplemental info, riddled with errors November 22, 2005 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
This dictionary has given me what I haven't found elsewhere: the stressed syllable, the actual pronunciation of the schwa, lots of inflectional details. Unfortunately typos, omissions and errors in the alphabetical order abound. The funny translitteration makes can make it difficult to find words encountered in written text. I give a high rating because the good stuff to me by far outweighs the negatives.
Useful information but best suited for intermediate + students. December 27, 2004 toothygrin (San Francisco, CA USA) 12 out of 13 found this review helpful
Everyone has noticed the problem: Romanized transliteration is confusing. Someone else made the excellent recommendation: learn the alef-bet (and the pointing system) and use a real dictionary. Now that I am more familiar with written Hebrew, this dictionary has become more utile. It provides excellent instructions on pronunciation of Hebrew words. It is also handy for identifying a word that I have only heard spoken: I can just look up the transliterated word to find the meaning and the correct alef-bet spelling.
