Amazon.com Review Sure, you can visit the top tourist sights in Katmandu without knowing any Nepali at all. But to feel comfortable in a village, or to talk to the people of Nepal about more than the price of a souvenir, you'll want to feel some comfort with their language, and Teach Yourself Nepali is a great way to get started. The tapes start at the beginning, with Nepali vowels, nasalized Nepali vowels, and consonants. Then, once you've mastered those, the pleasant British voice takes you, firmly and deliberately, through the necessary lessons, building your command and confidence before leading you through the next language skill. It's a fine method, because you can go back and repeat any section as many times as you want before proceeding, and because there's a thorough study book that comes with the tapes that mirrors the audio lessons. Do you learn best by listening and speaking? You can go heavy with the tapes and use the book as a backup. Do you need to see words in black and white on the page before your brain will grasp the concept? Focus on the text and listen to the tapes for the finer points of pronunciation. It's helpful to have all the information available in two modes of instruction. The book not only teaches you grammar and dialogue, it also teaches you to write and read Nepali script, which is handy not only when you're trying to read signs in Katmandu but when you're wanting to learn the written dialogue or use the Nepali-English glossary, which includes the phoneticized Nepali version as well as the Nepali script. There's a lot to learn, but keep at it and you'll be saying Ciya cha ki chaina? ("Is there any tea or not?") in no time. --Stephanie Gold

Product options are a little confusing. September 16, 2008 S. Mundro The Teach Yourself Nepali products are a little confusing, so be careful when ordering: * Teach Yourself Nepali Complete Course Audiopackage (Paperback) -- This is the one you probably want, the course book and 2 CDs. Note the "Audiopackage" in the title. * Teach Yourself Nepali Complete Course (Paperback) -- This is the course book only, without the CDs. (If you click on the "Paperback (2)" link it will take you to the one with the CDs, or back if you're on the Audiopackage page) * Teach Yourself Nepali (Teach Yourself Complete Courses) [AUDIOBOOK] -- I have to assume that this is a reading of the book, not the 2 CDs that accompany the course book in the first package, although I haven't seen the item. I've just received the Audiopackage, and will update my review once I've spent some time trying to learn a little Nepali.
A good course if you're dedicated! September 13, 2008 Lorraine Y. Aubert (Mammoth Lakes, CA) If you order the correct package, the "complete audiopackage," you will receive the audio CD's. This is a great Nepali language course if you are a dedicated student. The course requires you to learn Devanagari script and if you're not going to do that, then you don't want this course. I am an experienced language learner and would have preferred a little better organization in teaching the grammar and verb conjugation. It is a little confusing in that respect. Overall, I think its a great course for the money.
Excellent February 8, 2008 A. karki (Houston, TX) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Book cam on time brand new but recycle material. This book is written by a professor who has very strong back ground both English and Nepali literature.I am Nepali and I bought this book for my dearly wife who's mother tongue is not Nepali. Now with help of this book she is learning Nepali faster than I thought.
OK for what it contains August 18, 2007 Brandon Simpson (Northern Kentucky) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Finding resources for under-studied languages like Nepali is extremely difficult. It's a shame that this is one of the few books out there that teaches Nepali. I don't like the organization of the book. It doesn't teach you vocabulary, grammar, or phrases in a logical order. Learning the script was difficult since the book doesn't contain very much information on how to do so. This book should be used with another book about Nepali. But I have to warn you that the Nepali words aren't always transliterated the same way in two books. Brandon Simpson
Definitely not Pimsleur January 4, 2007 M. Bontekoe (Orlando, FL) 3 out of 5 found this review helpful
I'm sure there's lots of good information in this course, but it is set forth in an extremely difficult to use manner. There are no pauses on the CD for the student to repeat the information he is trying to learn. I am disappointed and also bummed out because no other course exists.
