Very good, but.... December 16, 2008 S. Duarte (MIAMI, FLORIDA United States) I bought this for a business trip to Moscow, since I really do not like to arrive @ a city I have never been to before without a clue. The guide was pretty good and accurate, but honestly and without any intention of criticizing Russians, the only thing that works in Moscow is having your interpreter to go about with you.
Worst Guide Book EVER December 12, 2008 DRC (Dallas, TX) Worst Travel Guide EVER!!! We travel internationally at least 3-4 times a year on vacation with our family. Therefore, I always buy a travel guide to help us with our destination. Our trip to Moscow in August 2008 was no exception. So bought this Eyewitness travel guide for Moscow because I heard it was a difficult city to get around. This is the worst travel guide ever!!! It has absolutely no practical information on the tourist sites. What I mean it that it has NO operating hours, NO operating days, NO metro stop listed, NO cost of tickets, etc. We tried three separate days to get into the Kremlin since this guide book was of no help at all. I truly thought we would have come all this way and not even get into the Kremlin since it is only open on certain days and the various museums themselves have different hours and only certain ticket booths sell tickets for certain of the museums. NOTHING is written in English at the sites. The lines are horribly long so it is not proactical to try to stand in each one of the 7 or so to see if you got it right. If you can not read or speak Russian you are doomed. Unless of course you have a worthwhile guide book. We did finally get into the Kremlin with the help of a kind Russian soul who spoke some English but as it was I spent full price for my 2 kids since I did not realize there was a child discount as the guide book did not even mention that (or any pricing at all for the matter) Avoid this worthless book!!
Good, but light on practical information. August 21, 2008 J. Bennett (Chicago, IL) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This book does a good job covering all the main sites of Moscow. The illustrations are very detailed and intense. I think it would best fit someone who is only in Moscow for a day or two, and just wants to hit a few of the touristy attractions. I bought this book, but also purchased the Fodor's guide to Moscow and St. Petersburg. Fodor's has much much more practical information - such as best days and times to see certain things, places to avoid, where to buy the best souvenirs, where to stay away from .. etc. It is also much more subjective and they offer their opinions on certain sites. This guide does not offer this subjectivity, and only offers very general and limited practical information.
great June 13, 2008 Dee Williams (Richland, WA) good guide book if you are primarily looking for photos and maps. Not much specific info.
New Edition is Wonderful. October 19, 2007 J. Beardsley (MD USA) I really like the new edition of the book. It is quite accurate, and easy to use while exploring Moscow. As with all these DK guides, the photographs and accompanying text offer a unique companion to your travels. My only complaint is the sections on sites outside and around Moscow are weak. More people need to explore outside the city.
