Product Description
The attractive, sleek Compaq Presario V6000 Series gives you no-compromise power at a great price. All the performance of a desktop PC, but with complete mobility.

Amazon.com Product Description
Take your computing life with you wherever you roam with the Compaq Presario V6210US designed for the budget-minded mobile professional. Featuring a cool, modern metallic design, the V6210US weighs only 6.6 pounds and measures just over 1.5 inches thick. The widescreen 15.4-inch BrightView display is easily viewable even in direct sunlight and is great for watching DVD movies in their natural aspect ratio. You can easily burn your home video productions to DVD for friends and family with the dual-layer, multi-format DVD/CD burner, which enables you to store up to 8.5 GB of data on a DL disc. Enjoy movies or music in seconds with the external DVD or music buttons to launch HP QuickPlay (which bypasses the boot process).

It's powered by a powerful 2.0 GHz AMD Turion 64 MK-36 processor (which is ready to handle demanding 64-bit applications), and also offers an 80 GB hard drive, 1 GB of installed RAM (2 GB maximum), integrated Wi-Fi LAN (802.11b/g), ExpressCard 54/34 card slot, an Nvidia GeForce Go 6150 graphics card with up to 288 MB of shared video memory, and built-in Altec Lansing speakers.

It comes preinstalled with Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium, which includes all of the Windows Media Center capabilities for turning your PC into an all-in-one home entertainment center. In addition to easily playing your DVD movies and managing your digital audio library, you'll be able to record and watch your favorite TV shows (even HDTV). Vista also integrates new search tools throughout the operating system, includes new parental control features, and offers new tools that can warn you of impending hardware failures.

The Basics

  • Processor: Combining strong performance with efficient usage of power, the 2.0 GHz AMD Turion 64 MK-36 is uniquely optimized to power today's thinnest notebooks. It's also built for tomorrow's 64-bit applications, which will require a processor with significant power. It includes such AMD technology features as HyperTransport (which increases the communication between integrated circuits), PowerNow! (which enables longer battery life and reduced heat generation), and Enhanced Virus Protection (which works with Windows XP Service Pack 2 to better withstand attacks from certain classes of viruses). It also features a 512 KB L2 cache and up to 1600 MHz front-side bus (FSB). (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance. The FSB carries data between the CPU and RAM, and a faster front-side bus will deliver better overall performance.)
  • Hard Drive: The 80 GB hard drive is becoming average in size for notebook PCs, and it's roomy enough to store business productivity applications, all your important documents and presentations, and a good-sized digital audio and video library. But it offers a faster-than-normal speed of 5400 RPM, and this Serial ATA (SATA) hard drive quickens the pace even further with a higher speed transfer of data--akin to FireWire and USB 2.0.
  • Memory: The 1 GB of built-in memory (PC5300, DDR2 SDRAM, 2 x 512 MB) is good start, and it offers a top-of-class 667 MHz speed. It has two memory slots, enabling you to add a maximum of 2 GB to handle immersive 3-D video games, video editing, graphics-intensive presentations, and multiple open business productivity applications. Also, to receive the benefits of the dual-channel DDR2 RAM, any RAM additions require memory modules of same capacity and clockspeed.
  • DVD/CD Drive: The multiformat DVD/CD drive is compatible with writing both DVD+ and DVD- disc formats as well as dual-layer (DL) DVD+/-R discs, which can store up to 8.5 GB of data. It features 4x DVD-R DL Write Once, 2.4x DVD+R DL Write Once, 8x DVD+R, 4x DVD+RW, 8x DVD-R, 4x DVD-RW, 16x DVD-ROM, 40x CD-R, 24x CD-RW, and 40x CD-ROM speeds.
  • Keyboard & Mouse: This notebook has a 101-key keyboard and a touchpad with on/off button and dedicated vertical/horizontal Scroll Up/Down pad. It also includes two quick-launch buttons (HP QuickPlay Music and DVD).
Screen, Video & Audio
The 15.4-inch WXGA high-definition display provides razor-sharp graphics and plenty of room for your widescreen movies, thanks to its 1280 x 800-pixel resolution. Video is powered by the integrated Nvidia GeForce Go 6150 graphics/video card, which provides up to 288 MB of video memory shared with the system memory. It features Nvidia's PureVideo technology--which provides great picture clarity, smooth video, accurate color, and precise image scaling for video content--and full support for Microsoft DirectX 9.0 for stunningly realistic cinematic effects for all DirectX-compatible applications. The built-in Altec Lansing speakers provide exceptional sound.

Networking, Connectivity & Expansion
This notebook has an integrated 54g wireless LAN that's compatible with 802.11b and 802.11g networks. It also includes a next-generation ExpressCard 54/34 card slot (though no standard PCMCIA slot), which lets you take advantage of thinner, faster, and lighter expansion cards for even more advanced wireless, networking, storage, and security features. You get a good offering of connectivity options:

  • 3 USB 2.0 ports for connecting a wide range of peripherals--from digital cameras to MP3 players
  • 1 FireWire (also known as IEEE 1394 or i.Link) port for connecting digital video camcorders and other peripherals
  • 1 VGA monitor port
  • 1 S-Video port for connecting to a TV
  • 1 headphone jack and 1 microphone jack
  • 1 notebook expansion port 3 (for use with the HP xb3000 Expansion Base or the HP Notebook QuickDock)
  • 1 consumer IR (infrared)
  • 5-in-1 memory card reader (Secure Digital, MultiMedia, Memory Stick, Memory Stick PRO, xD Picture Card)
It also has an integrated 56K modem (V.90) and an RJ-45 LAN network port (for a 10/100 Ethernet connection to networks and DSL/cable modems).

Operating System
Windows Vista Home Premium is the operating system for users with advanced computer needs, and it includes all of the Windows Media Center capabilities for turning your PC into an all-in-one home entertainment center for watching DVD movies and accessing your digital audio library. You can also use Windows Media Center to record and watch your favorite TV shows (even HDTV) and to access new kinds of online entertainment content. Computers that include Windows Vista Home Premium and an auxiliary Windows SideShow display will also allow you to access key data even when your computer is off. It is also easier than ever to share files between other PCs in your household and to manage your laptop computer settings to more securely connect to your favorite Wi-Fi hotspot.

Every edition of Windows Vista provides the essential tools and technologies to help protect you whether you are browsing the Internet, connecting to a wireless network, or just reading e-mail. All editions of Windows Vista include new tools that can warn you of impending hardware failures long before you have lost any important personal data. And, all Windows Vista editions include parental control features that allow you to manage and monitor your family's use of games, the Internet, instant messaging, and other activities.

4 out of 5 stars Compaq Presario review   September 28, 2008
Danny Gasik (West Lafayette, IN USA)
Compaq Presario F761US 15.4-inch Laptop (AMD Athlon 64 X 2 Dual Core TK-57 Processor, 1 GB RAM, 160 GB Hard Drive, DVD Drive, Vista Premium)

I bought my Presario after an incident with a roommate which involved a glass of water spilling across my old laptops keyboard. Needless to say it was fried so I was in the market for a new laptop. We went to the local office supply store in search of a comparable computer in terms of utility and price. The laptop I was trying to replace was a bottom level HP pavilion from a few years back. Anyways, we couldn't find the same model as I previously had and we found this to be fairly similar. Although I will admit that I prefer the XP operating system, I haven't had very many problems running Vista.
Everything was fine with this new computer of mine until eventually a sensor fell loose within the frame of the screen. The backlight would flicker on and off as you adjusted the screen position and I would have to get it just right. This produce comes with a one year warranty that covers problems like this however, and it was very easy to get in touch with the service representatives. I got in touch with them and gave them my contact information and within a few days they had sent me the packaging to send my computer out in, with pre-paid postage on the inside to place over the existing postage. Inside were detailed instructions as to packaging and locating a fed-ex registered drop off site. I packaged and dropped off my computer on a Tuesday around noon, and it came back Friday in the same week. I don't know how long these things normally take, but I was impressed at the speedy return.
Aside from the screen problem everything has run beautifully with my new laptop. All in all, it's a product that I would recommend and will continue to use.

4 out of 5 stars Great machine but needs more RAM to run Vista   March 14, 2007

Great machine.Works pretty good just out the box. Nice cover finish. But lacks of memory to run Vista in a good way. Im very happen with the performance, but the Windows Vista utility gaves her only 3.0 in the Vista index, main due to the poor graphics performance (I expected the NVIDIA board will be a fast one:O )

I'm upgrading from a cheap HP model buyed two years ago and Im very happy with this, but the price of a model with two cores is not far away, so I recommend to spend a hundred bucks more and get a dual core processor machine. But if you dont have the extra bucks, this machine works pretty fine.

4 out of 5 stars I like this unit~!   March 10, 2007

I got mine at a local office supply store (named after a common desk item used to secure pieces of paper together with a small piece of steel wire), for just a bit under six-hundred dollars.

Anyway, it's pretty speedy, even running Vista home premium. There are lots of built-in features, including a media card reader. So far Vista hasn't given me any issues, though it fails to impress. Yes, Vista is more visually appealing, but upon using it for a few days, my impressions were along the lines of "we waited 5 years for this?" I turned off the Aero interface after playing with it for just a couple hours. Yeah, it looks kinda cool, but it provides no useful purpose. I switched it over to the Vista basic interface.

The look of the 6210 is very sleek and 'cool.' The case has a carbon fiber-like design molded into it. I LOVE the screen...absolutely love it. It's very bright and extremely clear; in wide-screen format. The touch pad (mouse) is also in a wide format, which is nice for bigger mitts like mine. Also, built in, are 3 USB ports, a fire wire port, an external monitor port, an S-video port for connecting to a TV, stereo microphones, and a modem (for times of desperation, I suppose. ;-).

The battery life isn't wonderful...a couple hours, max. This doesn't matter much to me, as I use it plugged in most of the time, anyway.

Would I recommend this laptop? Yes. This is especially true if one can find it on sale, as I did.

I like this unit enough that I really don't use my desktop much anymore...if that speaks of anything.

With a very nice price, this notebook represents a very good machine. AMD processor does a very nice job. And with 1GB RAM the programs flows better. It's appearance is amazing, all black solid color. The volume and multimedia buttons are great while using soft touch technology. The only problem is Windows Vista that is extremly slow, compared to the XP edition. Although it impresses on the visual effects.
